Summary

A magical island。 A dangerous task。 A burning secret。

Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life。 At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records。 As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages。

When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist。 Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they’re likely to bring about the end of days。

But the children aren’t the only secret the island keeps。 Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe。 As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn。

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours。

This book is now one of my favorite all time reads。 It is magical, both literally and figuratively。 I read the 398 pages 3 ish days and procrastinated doing all other work for grad school because I couldn’t put it down。 The story just carries all the way through - I was instantly into it, which is rare。 Please, do yourself a favor and read this。 It gives all the most amazing and wholesome feels。

Definitely a feel good read。 A very different story which I loved。 Major Harry Potter ish vibes。 I don’t think I’d personally recommend it to anyone because I don’t know if someone would love it or be meh about it。 I loved Lucy’s character - and the progressiveness of Linus and Arhurs relationship。

Very sweet。 A powerful story about being more than the sum of your parts。 Good message of how we did things in the past is not necessarily a good reason to continue them that way。 I really loved the LGBT representation in this novel, and how it did NOT center around making that an acceptable phenomenon。 It already was。 It was accepted by all as just one part of very complex people。 That was a great representation of it。

The story was fabulous。 Accepting differences and being kind were in the spotlight, and in a light and refreshing way。 I’d absolutely recommend this book。

Set in a magical world, Linus is a case worker at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth。 Living a dull and quiet life, his world changes when he’s assigned a highly classified case and must investigate the six magical children and their enigmatic caretaker at the Marsyas Island Orphanage。 While he’s cautioned that these children may bring on the apocalypse, Linus must learn how to sift through the prejudices that exist in his world and learn to take matters into his own hands。 Everything about this book is amazing。 Klune’s writing is so whimsical and charming and beautiful。 It oddly made me feel really peaceful while reading this book because it’s such a lighthearted book and I haven’t read a story like this in so long。 It’s also extremely wholesome, from its found family trope to its insanely romantic (and gay!!) love story。Klune’s book also contains so many moving lines that can be applied to the abundance of social issues that go on in our own lives。 Even though it’s a fictional novel, the hate and prejudice these children have dealt with feels achingly familiar。 From being told they cannot be what they dream to be because of their appearance to preconceived animosity towards their ancestry, Klune presents this insanely uplifting and meaningful story。 Hate is loud, but I think you’ll learn it’s because it’s only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard。 You might not ever be able to change their minds, but so long as you remember you’re not alone, you will overcome。 I think one thing that I loved the most about this book was Linus’s character development。 When you’re first introduced to him, he’s a very uptight and strict person。 He follows the rules to the t and never, ever breaks them。 However, when he ventures to the island, you get to see him come out of his shell and watch his life slowly become more colorful when he allows himself to enjoy the world around him。 He’s such a relatable dude and I strive to be as courageous and brave as he is。Honestly, all the characters are so lovable and unique, especially the children。 Even though it’s Linus’s story, Klune doesn’t hold back in making space to tell the children’s stories as well。 You learn about their backstories and their incredibly captivating and bright personalities。 Lucy is obviously my favorite, but all the children on the island have my heart completely。I highly recommend this book, especially if you’re looking for a delightful feelgood story。 This book made me tear up so many times because of its wholesomeness and I'm really glad I picked it up。 It’s definitely on my list for the best book I’ve read this year! 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 It is light and darling and wholesome and all things good。 The author excels in his humorous depictions of every character, small and large, and you can’t help but to love them。 Even down to the nosey neighbor and the irksome receptionist at the protagonist’s job, the author creates a very full and entertaining picture of his characters, reminding you of similar and relatable experiences in your own life。 Klune magically touches on serious themes in a light and be I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 It is light and darling and wholesome and all things good。 The author excels in his humorous depictions of every character, small and large, and you can’t help but to love them。 Even down to the nosey neighbor and the irksome receptionist at the protagonist’s job, the author creates a very full and entertaining picture of his characters, reminding you of similar and relatable experiences in your own life。 Klune magically touches on serious themes in a light and beautiful way, depicting the harm that can be caused by past trauma and very present prejudices, all the while making you fall head over heels for the characters in the process of healing and the man who finds the courage to step out of the rules that have bound his entire life to help them。 。。。more

3。5! I didn’t realize this was YA until after I finished it。 I enjoyed it and the tone reminded me a lot of Fredrik Backman, but I think it was somehow too lighthearted for my mood。 A very sweet book。

This book brought happy tears to my eyes quite a few times, especially toward the last few chapters。 I honestly can't recall if a book has ever had that effect on me。 This may just be the most wholesome story I've ever been told。 It is about falling in love (in so many ways), discovering your voice, standing up for what's right, and finding family in the most unexpected people。 I wish that my younger self could have read this book, especially the younger me that had felt I was too different to b This book brought happy tears to my eyes quite a few times, especially toward the last few chapters。 I honestly can't recall if a book has ever had that effect on me。 This may just be the most wholesome story I've ever been told。 It is about falling in love (in so many ways), discovering your voice, standing up for what's right, and finding family in the most unexpected people。 I wish that my younger self could have read this book, especially the younger me that had felt I was too different to belong。 。。。more

So utterly precious! I don't know what it is, but I just love stories about mousy men who discover their inner strength, who find friendship and love, after years being ground down。 From the first chapter, this book reminded me so much of one of my all-time favorites: Mr。 Wilmer by Robert Lawson。 Also, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty。 But this is definitely it's own thing, like a modern fairy tale, about a sad, shy man who works as a caseworker, investigating the orphanages for magical children。 So utterly precious!
